END OF INFRASTRUCTURE WORK ON THE GRAIN TERMINAL OF THE ABIDJAN PORT
The construction works of the infrastructures of the grain terminal are practically finished. According to Mr. Stéphane Alain FALLY, Head of the Studies and Works Department at the Abidjan Port Authority, the work is 99.5% complete.
To inquire about the progress of this project, the Executive Committee of the Abidjan Port Authority, led by the Managing Director, Mr. Hien Yacouba SIÉ, visited the site on Thursday 2 March 2023.
This visit, which precedes the forthcoming inauguration of the said terminal, scheduled for this month of March 2023, was an opportunity for the PAA's management team to note the effective completion of the works which have made it possible to build 9.5 hectares of open storage yards, three (03) berths on 965 meters of quay lines (West quay 450 m, North quay 215 m and South quay 300 m) with two transition zones. The draughts vary between 10 and 14 m. The North and West quays have 26 100-ton bollards, 45 fenders and 3 ladders; the South quay has 18 35-ton bollards and 4 ladders.
The new infrastructure will receive its first ship on 15 March.
Its putting into service will boost the competitiveness of the Abidjan Port, in the sense that this terminal will facilitate the reception of Overpanamax vessels that can carry between 40,000 and 50,000 tons of bulk foodstuffs (compared to 30,000 currently). This is an opportunity that millers will be able to seize to achieve economies of scale on import costs.
In the vision of Mr. Hien SIÉ, this terminal was also built to play a key role in food security, both for Côte d'Ivoire and for the landlocked countries of the West African hinterland, whose needs for cereal products are constantly increasing.
It should be recalled that the construction works were launched on Thursday 16 January 2020, when the foundation stone was laid by the Minister of Transport, Mr. Amadou KONE, in the presence of Mr. Kouassi Kobenan ADJOUMANI, Minister of State, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, and the former Secretary of State in charge of Maritime Affairs, Mr. Philippe LÉGRÉ.
