ABIDJAN PORT WELCOMES TWO CRUISE SHIPS: MS NORWEGIAN SKY AND MS RIVIERA
Abidjan Port is solidifying its position as a preferred stopover for cruise ships. On Thursday, November 28, 2024, the port simultaneously welcomed two impressive cruise liners, the MS Norwegian Sky and the MS Riviera, both over 200 meters long.
This marks the first time Abidjan Port has hosted two cruise ships simultaneously, showcasing the port’s infrastructure efficiency and the quality of its services.
The ships docked at the new Grain Terminal, which spans 9.5 hectares, features a quay length of 700 meters, and has a draft of 13.5 meters. Since its commissioning in May 2023, this state-of-the-art terminal has frequently received cruise ships. In fact, the arrival of MS Norwegian Sky and MS Riviera brings the total number of cruise ship visits to five for November 2024 alone.
The MS Norwegian Sky, built in 1999, commissioned in 2004, and renovated in 2022, belongs to Norwegian Cruise Line NCL America. Measuring 260 meters in length, 32.5 meters in width, and with a draft of 8 meters, it can accommodate 2,002 passengers. It arrived with 1,752 passengers and 855 crew members on board.
The MS Riviera, a luxury cruise ship operated by Oceania Cruises, was constructed in 2011. Known for offering intimate sea voyages, the ship measures 232 meters in length, 32 meters in width, and has a draft of 7.32 meters. It boasts 15 decks and hosted 1,166 passengers and 745 crew members during its stop in Abidjan.
The passengers onboard these ships had the opportunity to explore Côte d’Ivoire’s rich cultural and historical heritage. They visited Treichville’s Artisanal Village, the Museum of Civilizations, Saint Paul’s Cathedral in Abidjan Plateau, the beaches and National Costume Museum in Grand-Bassam, and Bingerville’s Botanical Garden.
With its modernized facilities, Abidjan Port aims to enhance Côte d’Ivoire’s attractiveness as a tourist destination and contribute to the development of the country’s tourism industry.
