EAtHC-19: PARTICIPANTS IMMERSED IN THE REGIONAL ACADEMY OF MARINE SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

Following two days of fruitful discussions dedicated to capacity building in hydrography, participants in the seminar of the 19th Conference of the Eastern Atlantic Hydrographic Commission (EAtHC-19) concluded their programme with a visit to the Regional Academy of Marine Science and Technology (ARSTM), a leading institution for training in maritime, port, and logistics professions.

This immersion enabled the delegations to discover the Academy’s educational and technical infrastructure, as well as the ambitious modernization projects undertaken to support its development. The visitors toured the construction sites of new dormitories designed to increase student accommodation capacity before discovering several platforms and facilities dedicated to practical training.

During the visit, the Director General of ARSTM, Colonel-Major Karim COULIBALY, presented the institution’s strategic vision, its main development priorities, and its role in training qualified human resources for Africa’s maritime sector. He also highlighted the diversity of training programmes and courses offered by the Academy to meet the demands of a constantly evolving maritime environment.

The visit enabled participants to gain a concrete understanding of ARSTM’s capacity to support the development of marine sciences and technologies across the continent. It also provided a practical illustration of the themes addressed during the Regional Capacity-Building Seminar held on June 29 and 30, 2026, under the theme:

“Training in Hydrography, Oceanography and Marine Cartography in West, Central and North Africa and Europe: Achievements and Prospects.”

This immersion thus marked the conclusion of a seminar devoted to experience sharing, international cooperation, and capacity building in support of navigation safety and maritime governance.
