END OF THE ANNUAL AIVP CONFERENCE: 400 PROFESSIONALS, INCLUDING ABIDJAN PORT, MEET IN LISBON TO DISCUSS THE FUTURE OF PORT CITIES
The World Conference of the International Association of Cities and Ports (AIVP), which began on Wednesday, November 27, concluded on Friday, November 29, 2024, with technical visits to the Port of Lisbon.
This event, attended by the Abidjan Port Authority, saw record international participation, with 400 attendees from 41 countries.
The conference focused on key issues such as climate change adaptation, environmental protection, the blue economy, and energy transition. These discussions laid the groundwork for the third United Nations Ocean Conference, scheduled to take place in Nice, France, in June 2025.
The Lisbon meeting also facilitated new commitments to AIVP’s Agenda 2030, which enables port cities to contribute to the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The Abidjan Port Authority, committed to environmental protection, actively participated in the event. Over the three days, Mr. Hien Yacouba SIÉ, Managing Director of Abidjan Port Authority, and his delegation engaged in discussions to share best practices, explore emerging trends, and address the common challenges faced by modern port cities.
The objective of the conference was to foster a new model of collaboration between port authorities, local governments, and citizens to collectively address the increasingly urgent challenges posed by climate emergencies, as well as certain economic and social crises. The theme of the 2024 edition was: "Open Quays: When Flows Connect Citizens, Port Cities, and the Planet."
The central message of this edition, which will be presented at COP 30 on Climate Change in November 2025 in Brazil, is that ports can act as drivers and accelerators of the green transition and provide innovative solutions for more sustainable cities.
The closing ceremony was highlighted by the handover to the city of New York, which will host the 2025 AIVP World Conference as a port city.
