SECOND PMWCA ANNUAL COUNCIL MEETING THE ROLE OF PORT IN MITIGATING CLIMATE CHANGE
The 42nd annual PMAWCA Council meeting and the 17 th Round Table took place from 15 November 2022 and ended on 18 November 2022.
This statutory meeting of port players was the opportunity to move ahead towards energy transition and the digitalization of the continent’s port activities. Such was the message given during the closing of the meetings on the main theme: “Role of the Ports in the Face of the Effects of Climate Change”
At the beginning of the discussions, the African Port Authorities asserted that concrete actions have been taken in their administrations to introduce structural changes in their operations: The aim being moving from fossil energy (oil mineral coal and natural gas) to clean energy.
Dealing with this issue, the ports were given the opportunity to share the experience of Tanger Med from Morocco, the most environmentally friendly port in Africa and rated one of the greenest port in the world.
During these three days, the Managers of 25 ports originating from 19 countries of the continent held discussions on environmental sustainability policies and port ecosystems issues
Several Managing Directors of PMAWCA’S member port attended the meetings, including DR. Alberto Antonio BENGUE, Chairman of the Ports Association of Angola (APANG). Mr Mickael LUKUJE, Director General of Ghana Port Authority. Mr Mohamed BELLO-KOKO, Director general of Nigerian ports; Mr Seraphin BHALAT, Director General of Port of Pointe Noire and; and many other port operators and industry.
A large delegation of Abidjan Port Authority a founding member of the Association, led by Mr Macky SANGARE, Director of Digital information system took part in the event. Thus Abidjan Port Authority, on that occasion was awarded « the prize for the Best Performance in Import / Export traffic Growth 2020-2021 (in volume ) by “African Ports Awards” Foundation owing to the increase in gross overall traffic from 27 023 250 tons in 2020 to 30 045 960 tons in 2021.
