Port Performance: Abidjan Port Welcomes Cape Size Vessel Nearly 300 Meters Long at Bulk Terminal
The Abidjan Port continues to solidify its status as a major maritime hub on West Africa’s Atlantic coast. Following the arrival of the 400-meter MSC DILETTA—capable of carrying up to 24,000 containers—at the second container terminal (TC2), the Bulk Terminal has now proven its capacity with the arrival of a Cape Size vessel.
For the first time in its history, Abidjan’s Bulk Terminal (TVA) received the Mv DEYI DILIGENCE, a massive bulk carrier measuring 289 meters in length and 45 meters in width. The vessel entered Ivorian waters carrying 126,463 tons of clinker, a key raw material for cement production.
To mark this historic call, the terminal’s concessionaire, SEA INVEST, through its subsidiary TVA, organized an official ceremony on Friday, June 27, 2025, at the headquarters of the Abidjan Port Authority.
The event was attended by several prominent figures, including Mr. Kadjo N’GUETTA Louis, Technical Advisor representing the Minister of Transport, Mr. Amadou KONÉ; Mr. Hien Yacouba SIÉ, Managing Director of the Abidjan Port; Mr. Anthony ARCIDIACO, Africa Director of SEA INVEST; Ms. Myriam OUASSENAN, Managing Director of TVA; Mr. ESSAM Daoud, Managing Director of CulturA and the vessel's charterer; as well as local authorities and members of the Abidjan Port Community.
In his remarks, Mr. SIÉ praised this new milestone achieved by the port. He acknowledged the strategic vision of President Alassane OUATTARA, whose substantial investments have repositioned the port as one of the most efficient platforms on the continent. He emphasized that receiving such large vessels represents a major breakthrough, particularly for the rapidly expanding Ivorian mining sector. He also highlighted the remarkable growth of traffic at the Bulk Terminal—from 1 million tons in 2011 to nearly 8 million tons in 2024—demonstrating the sector's upward trajectory.
Speaking next, Mr. ARCIDIACO reaffirmed his group’s commitment to continuing its investments at the Abidjan Port to consolidate its regional hub position. He emphasized the competitive advantages gained by Ivorian mining operators through the ability to receive vessels of this size.
Mr. ESSAM Daoud praised the professionalism of Ivorian port teams and their ability to handle complex operations, while noting the economic impact of such activities:
“The arrival of this vessel is a testament to Ivorian expertise and high-level competence in port operations management. It enables significant economies of scale across the value chain. Importers gain competitiveness, and ultimately, consumers benefit through increased purchasing power.”
With the arrival of this nearly 300-meter vessel at the Bulk Terminal, Côte d’Ivoire has taken a decisive step forward in its logistical transformation, affirming its ambition to become a key player in maritime trade and a driver of economic growth for the region.
