PORT SECURITY: ABIDJAN PORT STRENGTHENS ITS SECURITY MEASURES IN COOPERATION WITH THE U.S. COAST GUARD
The Abidjan Port Authority (PAA) is hosting a mission of the U.S. Coast Guard from August 31 to September 4, 2026, focused on strengthening port security capabilities, in cooperation with the Directorate General of Maritime Affairs (DGAM).
Organized under the U.S. Government’s International Port Security Program, the mission includes a seminar on port security exercises, as well as assessments of two terminals at Abidjan Port: Côte d’Ivoire Terminal and the Abidjan Multipurpose Terminal.
At the opening of the proceedings, Colonel COFFI Yao Emmanuel, Harbour Master of Abidjan Port, representing the Managing Director of PAA, Mr. Kassoum TRAORE, welcomed the initiative, which contributes to strengthening the security and resilience of the port platform. He emphasized the importance of coordinated mobilization by all stakeholders across the Abidjan Port Community.
The mission is part of PAA’s continued commitment to complying with the requirements of the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code (ISPS Code), with which Abidjan Port has been compliant since 2004.
Colonel-Major Julien Yao KOUASSI, Director General of Maritime Affairs, underscored the strategic importance of this initiative in strengthening the security, reliability and competitiveness of Côte d’Ivoire’s ports.
For his part, Mr. Matt NAYLOR, Chargé d’Affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Côte d’Ivoire, commended the commitment of the Ivorian Authorities and PAA, while reaffirming the United States’ determination to pursue this cooperation and continue sharing expertise with Côte d’Ivoire.
Chairing the ceremony on behalf of the Minister of Transport, Mr. Amadou KONÉ, and the Minister Delegate in charge of Maritime Affairs, Dr. Célestin Doh SEREY, Mr. SORO Benjamin, Chief of Staff, called for stronger cooperation and coordination among the various stakeholders in order to sustainably strengthen the national maritime and port security framework.
Beyond training, the seminar provides a platform for dialogue and experience-sharing between Ivorian and American experts, contributing to the resilience of Côte d’Ivoire’s ports and the security of maritime trade.
