DEVELOPMENT OF IVORIAN PORT INFRASTRUCTURE AT THE CENTER OF A WORKSHOP INITIATED BY JICA
The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) organized a workshop on "the development of port infrastructure and the decongestion of Ivorian ports" on Friday, January 10, 2025, at IVOTEL Hotel in Abidjan-Plateau.
The event was attended by Mr. Dioman CONÉ, Chief of Staff to the Minister of Transport, representatives from Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism, JICA officials, as well as authorities from the ports of Abidjan and San Pedro, and members of the Abidjan Port Community. The Managing Director of PAA was represented by Mr. N’DOLI Kouadio André, Director of Engineering and Project Management.
This workshop was of particular interest to Ivorian ports, especially the Port of Abidjan, which benefited from Japanese government funding for the construction of its new Grain Terminal.
This terminal, which cost 70 billion CFA francs, spans 1,010 meters of quay and covers 9 hectares, with 7 hectares dedicated to warehouses and storage silos. Operational since May 2023, it enables the Port of Abidjan to accommodate bulk carriers with a 13.5-meter draft and a capacity of 70,000 tons, compared to 35,000 tons previously.
The workshop also facilitated discussions on future projects for Ivorian ports and new cooperation opportunities with Japan to improve urban transportation in Abidjan.
The workshop further enables to shed light on Japanese expertise.
Representatives of Japanese companies expressed their keen interest in contributing to the development of port and road infrastructure in Côte d’Ivoire.
On the following day, Saturday, January 11, 2025, a Japanese delegation led by Mr. FURUKAWA Yasushi, Japan’s Minister of State for Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism, visited the Port of Abidjan’s facilities to assess infrastructure projects completed since 2012.
The delegation visited the Grain Terminal, an outcome of the Ivorian-Japanese cooperation, and assessed its operational effectiveness.
