PMAWCA 2025: UNDER THE LEADERSHIP OF ITS DIRECTOR GENERAL, THE PORT OF ABIDJAN SPARKS THE DEBATE ON PORT RESILIENCE
On the sidelines of the 45th Annual Council of the Port Management Association of Port of West and Central Africa (PMAWCA), the Managing Director of Abidjan Port Authority (PAA), Mr. Hien Yacouba Sié, took part on November 5, 2025, in a high-level panel on the theme “Developing resilient port strategies.”
Held in the auditorium of the Pointe-Noire Port Authority de, the meeting brought together numerous experts and decision-makers from the maritime sector. It provided a platform for dialogue on current challenges and future prospects aimed at strengthening the competitiveness of PMAWCA member ports in the face of economic, technological, and environmental changes.
Addressing port leaders from Dakar, Pointe-Noire, and Douala, Mr. Sié delivered a widely noted presentation outlining the Port of Abidjan’s strategy, built on modern, high-performance, value-creating land governance. He recalled the profound transformation undertaken at the Port of Abidjan over the past decade, marked by major structural reforms and an ambitious CFA 1,500-billion investment program.
These investments enabled the development of large-scale infrastructure, including a second container terminal, a ro-ro terminal, a fishing terminal jetty, a grain terminal, and the widening and deepening of the Vridi Canal—now capable of accommodating very large vessels.
These advances have significantly enhanced the competitiveness of the Abidjan port platform. The Port’s top executive noted that the port recorded a record traffic volume of 40 million tonnes of goods in 2024, confirming its attractiveness to international shipping lines and investors.
Continuing his remarks, Mr. Sié emphasized the ongoing reform of port land management, focused on asset control, optimized land allocation, and a firm commitment to sustainable development.
He also stressed the need for strengthened dialogue between ports and governments, a key condition for sustainably addressing land-related challenges that determine the future expansion of port platforms. Through the City-Port dynamic, he recalled that harmony between urban and port spaces is a true competitiveness factor.
The Managing Director concluded his intervention with a striking statement:
“A port that is doing well costs more than an expensive port that is well run.”
In sum, through this intervention, Mr. Hien Yacouba Sié shared the vision and strategic initiatives implemented to sustainably position the Port of Abidjan as a modern, resilient logistics hub serving regional economic development.
