ABIDJAN PORT : THE SECOND CONTAINER PORT CONTINUES TO ATTRACT THE BIG SHIPS.
Thanks to the modernization works of the port infrastructure initiated over the ten last years by the Top Management of Abidjan Port Authority, the shipowners charter more large capacity vessels a bound for Côte d’Ivoire.
Thus,on Wednesday 24 January 2024,Abidjan Port received on its second Container Terminal ( TC2)the containership MAERSK EDIRNE,366 m long and 48m wide for a loading capacity of 13676 TEUs.
The calling of this gigantic sea ship at the Abidjan Port, takes place within the framework of the launching of a new service of the Danish Group MAERSK,named FEWS.This new shipping line will allow to reach directly to Abidjan Port from the Asian Continent.
The chartering of such vessels (14000 TEUs) to Abidjan is possible now thanks to the resizing works( widening and deepening) of the Vridi Canal’s entrance and particularly the construction of TC2.
This new modern terminal built on 37.5 ha of open ground with 16 m draught which was put into operation since the end of 2022,has 6 wide span shore cranes,18 electric yard cranes and 36 electric tractors. It reinforces the Abidjan Port’s handling capacity of containers, which has increased from 1 to 2,5 million TEUS.
Note that the reception of these new generation ships strengthen the ambition of the Port Authority to make Abidjan Port the main hub on the West African Coast.
