ABIDJAN PORT WELCOMES A COSCO SHIPPING’S LARGE CAPACITY VESSEL

On Thursday, October 31, 2024, the second container terminal (TC2) at Abidjan Port hosted the "EA CENTAURUS," a container ship measuring 272 meters in length, 43 meters in width, and with a draft of 14.3 meters. Its transport capacity is 7,000 TEUs.

The vessel's arrival was marked by a ceremony attended by Mr. Hien Yacouba SIÉ, the Managing Director of Abidjan Port Authority, Mr. Koen DE BEKKER, Managing Director of Côte d’Ivoire Terminal (CIT), and Mr. PRAVEER KHARE, Managing Director of DIAMOND Shipping Service, the ship’s agent. Several other stakeholders of the port also were also present.

During his remarks, Mr. PRAVEER KHARE highlighted that this inaugural call marked the beginning of a series of visits, as DIAMOND Shipping Service and its partner COSCO are committed to routing container ships with capacities between 7,000 and 7,500 TEUs to Abidjan Port on a weekly basis.

Mr. Hien Yacouba SIÉ welcomed this dynamic trend and noted, "The presence of your 7,000-TEU ship at Abidjan Port, the largest operated by DIAMOND Shipping, is the proof that we have a competitive terminal. This achievement stems from the determination and commitment of the Head of State and the government to modernize Abidjan Port. We are proud that operators place their trust in Abidjan Port's platform, particularly with its new, high-performance container terminal."

Since the commissioning of the second container terminal in December 2022, several large vessels carrying up to 13,000 TEUs have been received. This performance is the result of two major infrastructure modernization projects undertaken by the Port Authority: the widening and deepening of the Vridi Canal entrance channel, and the construction of TC2, built on a 37.5-hectare platform. The terminal boasts state-of-the-art quay cranes with extended reach, advanced yard equipment, and cutting-edge technology that underpin its operational efficiency.
