CLOSING OF THE IACP 2023 CONFERENCE: PORTS INVITED TO MEASURE THEIR SOCIO-ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT
The 2023 Conference of the International Association of Cities and Ports (IACP) closed its doors on 17 November 2023 after three (03) days of fruitful exchanges.
More than 200 participants from over 32 countries around the world discussed and shared their experiences in high-level panels and roundtables to address issues related to the operation of ports, their socio-environmental impact and the energy challenges they face in the face of global climate change.
To this end, a number of topics were discussed, such as the United Nations Global Compact on Sustainable Port Cities, the commitment of communities to a shared vision of the port city, the technologies to be implemented in the port cities of the future, the establishment of new routes for sustainable cruises and the modalities of mobility in port cities.
However, the Gordian knot remained the firm commitments that ports had to make to local authorities in terms of sustainable development and environmental protection. The solutions proposed centred on the implementation of a joint strategy between the port and local authorities to find concrete solutions to the above-mentioned problems; implement innovative and sustainable projects; decarbonise the economy; develop the green and blue economy; stimulate innovation by supporting initiatives such as renewable energy; and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
In his closing speech, after thanking the Municipality and Port Authority of the City of Venice for hosting and creating that framework for exchange, Mr. Mario GIRARD, Vice-President of IACP, announced that Lisbon (Portugal) would host the organization’s 2024 conference.
