THE GHANAIAN MINISTER OF FISHING AND AQUACULTURE DEVELOPMENT ON VISIT TO ABIDJAN PORT.
On a working mission in Côte d’Ivoire, as part of the strengthening of cooperation in the fiefd of fishing, fight against piracy and IUU fishing (illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing), Mrs Mavis Hawa KOOMSON, Minister of Fishing and Aquaculture Development, also Vice-Chairman of the Fisheries Committee for the West Central Gulf of Guinea (FCWC-FISH) visited Abidjan Port on 4 August 2022.
Mrs Mavis Hawa KOOMSON, accompanied by the special Adviser to the Ivorian Minister of Animal and Fishery Ressources, Mr AKAFFOU Isidore, was received by Mr Hien Yacouba SIÉ, Managing Director of Abidjan Port Authority. She declared, on that occasion, that her presence at the Port of Abidjan was aimed to have an appreciation of the Ivorian know-how in the field of Fishery.
For this purpose, the delegation and herself have been able to discover the infrastructure of the Fishing Terminal, mainly, the new mole which was put in operation since 2015 and which accommodates industrial fishing activities. They also visited SCODI, the canning unit of Côte d’Ivoire which has an annual production of more than 250 000 tons of canned tuna, making Côte d’Ivoire, the First Tuna Port in Africa and the second Tuna Port after Japan.
The Port Authority made a presentation of the Fishing Terminal’s assets and its operating mode and declared that he was honoured by the visit of the Minister Mavis Hawa KOOMSON, and said that Abidjan Port Authority was willing to accompany FCWC in its fight against piracy and IUU fishing so as to ensure a sustainable management of fishery ressources located in the national jurisdictions of Côte d’Ivoire and GHANA. FCWC, which is chaired by Mr Tiemoko Sidi TOURÉ, is a regional organisation of fishing founded in 2007 in BENIN by Six (6) contracting countries which are Benin, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Liberia, Nigeria and Togo.
