THE HELLENIC REPUBLIC STRENGTHENS ITS COOPERATION WITH THE STATE OF CÔTE D'IVOIRE
A delegation from the Hellenic Republic (Greece) led by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, HEM. Nikos Dendias, arrived in Côte d'Ivoire on 11 January 2023, for a working mission with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Integration and the Diaspora to strengthen cooperation between Greece and Côte d'Ivoire, came to visit the Abidjan Port facilities on Thursday 12 January 2023.
Accompanied by HEM. Efthymios-Georges COSTOPOULOS, the Greek Ambassador to Senegal, Special Envoy for the Sahel (including Côte d'Ivoire), the delegation was received by the Port Harbour Master, Colonel COFFI YAO Emmanuel, representing the Managing Director of the Abidjan Port Authority (PAA), Mr. Hien Yacouba SIÉ, in the presence of some sectoral directors.
Taking advantage of this visit, the representative of the Greek government proceeded to the signature of a financing agreement with the Interregional Maritime Safety Institute (ISMI), a branch of the Regional Academy of Maritime Sciences and Techniques (ARSTM) based in Abidjan.
On this occasion, the Director General of ARSTM, Colonel Karim COULIBALY, indicated that this funding worth 40,000 Euros, or a little over 26 million CFA francs, is a support for capacity building of marine personnel from the Gulf of Guinea countries as part of the police exercise at sea. This training aims to fight more effectively against maritime insecurity (theft, aggression and other maritime piracy) in the Gulf of Guinea. He welcomed this cooperative action by the Greek State, hoping that such an initiative would be continued and intensified in the years to come.
Speaking at the event, Ambassador Efthymios-Georges COSTOPOULOS, welcomed his country's involvement in the fight against insecurity in the Gulf of Guinea, an area regularly frequented by many vessels from Greece, a world leader in terms of the value of its fleet.
The representative of the Ivorian government, Mr. CONÉ Dioman, Director of Cabinet of the Minister of Transport also welcomed Greece's willingness to strengthen its cooperation with Côte d'Ivoire, while recalling the excellent relations that have always existed between the two countries.
For his part, the Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs said that his country and Côte d'Ivoire will continue to expand their relations in several strategic areas including diplomacy, trade, economy, security, education, etc.
As for the fight against maritime insecurity in the Gulf of Guinea, he stressed that his country intends to contribute in the long term through other concrete actions, in addition to the funding granted to ISMI.
The meeting ended with a visit by the host delegation to the two container terminals of the Abidjan Port.
