PORT COOPERATION AND SUSTAINABLE TRANSITION: THE ABIDJAN PORT AUTHORITY HOLDS DISCUSSIONS WITH ENABEL BELGIUM AND THE PORT OF ANTWERP-BRUGES

The Acting Managing Director of the Abidjan Port Authority (PAA), Mr. Kassoum TRAORÉ, received in audience, on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, a Belgian delegation comprising representatives of Enabel and the Port of Antwerp-Bruges, as part of efforts to strengthen strategic partnerships in the port, logistics, and environmental sectors.

At the outset of the discussions, Mr. Tom DEDEURWAERDER, Country Director of Enabel, congratulated the Acting Managing Director on his appointment before presenting several projects currently being implemented in Côte d’Ivoire by the Belgian development agency. These initiatives notably concern sustainable value chains, biomass energy recovery, and socio-economic reintegration programmes.

The discussions mainly focused on prospects for cooperation regarding key issues related to the modernization of the Port of Abidjan, particularly ecological transition, the digitalization of port operations, and the strengthening of governance.

Both parties exchanged views on mechanisms aimed at reducing the environmental footprint of port activities through the gradual integration of international standards such as EcoPorts, air quality monitoring, and the promotion of more sustainable port practices.

Digital transformation also featured prominently in the discussions, with the ambition of supporting the Abidjan Port Authority in strengthening its governance tools, optimizing logistics flows, and enhancing the operational performance of the port platform.

Taking the floor, Mr. Kassoum TRAORÉ welcomed the interest shown by Enabel and the Port of Antwerp-Bruges in the Abidjan Port Authority, as well as in the development of port infrastructure and expertise in Africa. He reaffirmed the PAA’s willingness to consolidate technical and institutional partnerships capable of supporting its modernization drive and its ambition to enhance the competitiveness of the Port of Abidjan.

The meeting concluded with a shared understanding of the need to accelerate the implementation of structuring projects aimed at developing a more efficient, sustainable port that is fully aligned with international standards.
