The Vice President of MCC Visits Port Facilities
In order to have a clear idea of the development of the Abidjan Port facilities, a delegation led by Mrs. Fatema SUMAR, Vice President of Millennium Challenge Compact (MCC) – an American fund which aims to generate an inclusive economic growth and fight against poverty - had a guided tour of the Abidjan Port from the water area.
For the occasion, Mr. Hien Yacouba SIE made a presentation of the various facilities and stressed upon the projects in progress namely the second container terminal (TC2), the grain terminal and the RO-RO terminal.
He pointed that in the operational phase, these new facilities would enable the Abidjan Port to regain its position as the leading port in the sub region.
However, he noted that the expected growth would be paired with the increase of the number of engines operating in the port area – already overcrowded. Therefore, he stressed on the necessity, in view of making profits of the investments in progress, to ease the traffic flow through the building of new roads, notably the bypass roads to relieve the congestion of the port.
To this end, he revealed the project’s failures for upgrading the port’s boulevard which was adopted by MCC, by exposing the risks of increasing traffic jams in the port area if the project did not take into account the construction of annex roads before the launching of its execution.
Finally, he seized the opportunity of the visit to engage a lobbying to the MCC Vice President in view of a rapid start of the project for opening up new access roads in the port area.
