HYDROGRAPHY: THE ABIDJAN PORT AUTHORITY AND SHOM EXPLORE NEW AREAS OF COOPERATION
On the sidelines of the 19th Conference of the Eastern Atlantic Hydrographic Commission (CHAtO-19), held from July 1 to 3, 2026, at the Azalaï Hotel in Marcory, the Managing Director of the Abidjan Port Authority (PAA), Mr. Kassoum TRAORE, received, on Friday, July 3, 2026, a delegation from the French Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service (SHOM), led by its Director General, Admiral Laurent KERLEGUER, Armaments General Engineer.
The meeting provided an opportunity for both parties to discuss the strategic role of hydrography and marine charting in the development of maritime and port activities. They highlighted the importance of these disciplines for navigational safety, the development of maritime and port areas, as well as the knowledge and monitoring of seabed.
The discussions also focused on prospects for cooperation between PAA and SHOM, particularly regarding capacity building for hydrographers at the Abidjan Port Authority.
This cooperation could include specialized training in hydrography, marine charting and bathymetric survey technologies, with the aim of equipping teams with the skills and tools required to meet the growing demands of the maritime sector.
During the discussions, Admiral Laurent KERLEGUER emphasized that the maritime industry is a strategic issue for the global economy and stressed the need to ensure the long-term preservation of maritime areas. In this regard, he highlighted the importance of investing in training and continuously developing the skills of sector professionals.
Speaking in turn, Mr. Kassoum TRAORE welcomed the initiative, reaffirming that human capital development is a key driver of the modernization of the Abidjan Port Authority and the sustainable improvement of its service performance.
The meeting thus paves the way for strengthened cooperation between the Abidjan Port Authority and SHOM, based on expertise sharing, skills transfer and the development of innovative solutions for increasingly effective maritime governance.
