THE SECOND CONTAINER TERMINAL OF ABIDJAN PORT TO BE DELIVERED SOON
“Enable Abidjan Port to receive the biggest container ships so as to increase its container handling capacity”, such was the objective that has led the Top Management of Abidjan Port Authority headed by Mr Hien Yacouba SIÉ, to launch in October 2015, the construction of the second container terminal (Tl2) in Abidjan Port.
The Port Authority, through this project, strived for reinforcing the reception capacity of the first container terminal, which reached saturation, so as to be able to meet more efficiently the growing need of container traffic worldwide
The first phase of the project consisting in the building of the infrastructure, having been completed, the second phase which started in October 2020 for the design of superstructure and for fitting the new terminal with equipment is in its completion phase. Thus, the challenge of constructing a second container terminal in Abidjan is about to be responded pursuant to the vision of the Top Manager to make Abidjan a key Hub Port on the west African coast.
On August 18, 2002, six shore cranes and seven yard cranes have been delivered and installed, thus speeding up the progress of works on the Abidjan Port’s second Container Terminal.
This state-of-the-art equipment, with the best driving performance in Africa, and which meets the environmental standards, will enable to improve the Abidjan Port’s productivity, to reinforce delivery rate, to reduce the delays of cargo handling and contribute to further stimulate trade in west Africa
With the delivery of these devices right after the supply, a few months ago, of several electric tractors and six rubber-tyred gantries, the Terminal, once put into operation, will provide 6 shore gantries and 13 RTGs and 36 tractors.
The Terminal valued at 400 millions Euros, represents an investment on which the Abidjan Port Authorities are betting to increase significantly the traffic through the reception of third generation container ships with a loading capacity of 14000 TEUs at least, and a draft of 16 m.
The commissioning of the second Container Terminal in Abidjan Port, planned for November 2022, will enable to support, with greater dynamism, the economic development of Côte d’Ivoire and will contribute to consolidate the positioning of the Port as a Hub for the foreign trade in our sub-region.
